I Played Soccer For Most Of My Young Life

But something I never told anyone was that I didn’t know what “offsides” was. I’d be doing a perfectly great job, cruising towards the goal with the ball, when suddenly the ref would blow the whistle. “OFFSIDES!” It didn’t happen too often, but whenever it did it was a huge let-down to my team - part of the reason I ultimately became an amazing *goalkeeper* - when offsides, whatever it was, only worked to my advantage. It got so far past the point of being able to just ASK someone. I couldn’t stop the game to do that, and I was too ashamed to bring it up again later with my coach. Google (let alone AOL) would not exist for years. I know what “offsides” means now, but I haven’t played soccer in a long time.
